Retro VS Vintage!

Hello my loves!

Have you ever thought that there is actually a difference between being vintage and being retro? No, these two aren’t the same at all even though many people use both words for the same thing. I might sound like a perfectionist (…i am) but it gets a little bit, just a little bit, on my nerves when people don’t seem to accept the difference. It is totally fine to not know the difference but if you want to truly be in the vintage or retro scene, you need to know what these two are all about! If you want to know, keep reading!

I am Vintage!… or not?

So vintage is simply anything pre-1960! If you like dressing like they did at the 80s, you are not vintage! On the other hand, if you like the 50s you are at the vintage scene!

The word vintage is actually used to describe wine! It’s from the French word ”vendage” which means ”crop” or ”harvest”! It can also be used to describe an excellent wine from a crop of a good year.

When i first got in the vintage community i didn’t know the difference either. So if you were one of my very first readers you might still remember that my blog was called ”A Retro Athenian” for just a few days. Then i changed it right when i happened to learn the difference from the ”Style me vintage” book by Naomi Thompson. As you probably know, the eras i’m into are pre-1950, not to say pre-1940. So it’s clearly vintage for me!

I am Retro!… i think!

So since vintage is anything pre-1960, you can imagine that retro is anything post-1960!

The word retro is a synonym of old-fashioned or out-of-date. When i hear the word retro i usually have in mind a discotheque full of teenagers! Thinking of it again, when i listen to the word retro, i remember of my parents’ old photos! We all know how teens were dressed back in the 80s and how the used to have fun! It was when heavy metal started being even more popular (it started being around at the late 60s, right after the rock n roll). Also, it was when bangs with those distinctive hairstyles were in fashion.

To be honest with you, i don’t really like the eras after the 60s. I think it was when everything started to lose its meaning and after the 80s people had pretty much lost a lot of things (good manners, the meaning of family, religion, love etc.). This however, is just my view. Don’t get me wrong. The retro eras have beautiful parts as well and they can be really fun! But i guess we can’t like every era!

So that was the difference between vintage and retro! I really hope you liked it and hopefully you can now decide whether you are in the vintage scene or the retro scene!

Thank you very much for reading darlings. I will see you on my next post which is probably going to be the second part of ”What’s my era? (1910s-1920s)”.
